There is a looming recession here in America. The real estate markets have gone down, the stock market goes up one day and falls more the next, and there are job losses all around. One of the hardest hit areas has been the construction industry and the finance sector. If you have just lost your job, of if you feel you want to switch careers, take a close look at nursing.
The reason that nursing is a good option, especially during the looming recession is that nursing is a recession-proof career. There is always going to be a need for nurses, and in the near future, even if there is a recession, the salaries of nurses are going to go up due to the nursing shortage.
Nursing is in itself a large and diverse profession that has grown exponentially in the past decade or so. There is bound to be an area or specialization that is of interest to you.
Places of employment, like the Cleveland Clinic, one of the best hospitals in the country, are offering tuition reimbursements and other benefits to try and woo nurses, as the shortage is really getting bad. The baby boomers are starting to get to an age at which they will need more medical treatment and there are not enough nurses, many of who themselves are getting to retire, to fulfill the increased demand.
A couple months back Yahoo! HotJobs had an article, "Recession-Proof Jobs in 2008", in which nursing was mentioned as one of the careers that were recession proof.
Take a look at nursing, request some information from schools to get a better picture of the education outlook and how long it will take you to complete the requirements. Nursing is a financially and personally highly rewarding career.
